Q&A
What is your songwriting process?
It might sound weird, but I kind of write my songs as if they were already finished, and I was just playing them through. I come up with a chord progression, and I just start singing - the song takes me where it wants to go.
What's the favourite song you've written?
Honestly, it changes every week! Usually the song I like the most at any point in time is whichever is my most recent, but the two that have really stuck with me and I never tire of playing are Green and Gone.
Are your songs usually based off of your own personal life?
No, not usually. I tend to write in character, but of course I do use my own feelings and life experience to bring reality to my writing. I have to understand what I'm singing about!
Are you the only musician in your family?
No, both of my parents are musicians, and my sister is a talented singer herself. She's 15, and she also has a passion for visual arts. Head to the gallery section to see a beautiful drawing she did of me!
Do you ever get nervous when you're about to perform?
Oh yeah, of course! I always feel fine until I'm about 3 minutes from going up on stage, and then I'm basically freaking out for the first couple of songs until I feel like I'm comfortable enough to relax.
If you could describe your music as a colour, what would it be?
I think my music has two contrasting personalities, one is really emotional and thoughtful, which I associate with blue, and the other is sensual and powerful, which I associate with a pinky-red colour.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
My parents are both musicians, and they used to practice with their band while I was still in my mum's tummy. Without them, I don't think I ever would have considered music as a hobby or career. In terms of my songwriting, early on I was very much inspired by Brooke Fraser, and over time I guess I just developed my own style.
